I have been looking forward to today. Today we are going to Fota Wildlife Park. It is not a zoo; most of the animals are not caged and either run around free or are behind a barrier. Kangaroos were hopping about and a peacock was trying to impress another with its plumage at one of the small cafes in the park. Of course, cheetahs were in a cage, but that was about it. We walked around for about two hours just enjoying the animals and the calming atmosphere.
After the park, we headed back to the hotel and walked to the University College of Cork, established in 1892. It was a combination of old ivy covered buildings, and newer industrial looking buildings, and one glass structure. Not sure what kind of education you get there, but at least it is pretty.
And finally, the thing I had waited weeks for. When I was researching things to do in Ireland, I decided I wanted to take in some culture and see a show. And as it turns out, Cork has the Cork Opera House. So I perused what would be available while we were there and that is when I saw it. Frankenstein the play. Directed by Danny Boyle. You know, the guy who won an Oscar as best director for Slumdog Millionaire? Directed Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, and oh yes, the 2012 Summer Olympics? And starring Jonny Lee Miller, who was in Trainspotting, Dark Shadows, Hackers, and is one of Angelina Jolie's ex-husbands. So I had to see it. Bought two tickets online (seventh row from the front, kick butt seats) and was good to go. So we eat dinner across the street from the Opera House and head over for the show. I pick up the tickets at the box office and we get directed to our seats. That's when I see a big white screen on stage. That bodes ill. The theater starts filling up and that's when someone behind us says, "Wait, is this a movie?" Yes, the play was a film of the play... So my good seats for a play were crap seats for a movie. Three people in front of us get up and walk out. The only things that made me feel better was A. It was a good play and I really enjoyed it. B. I wasn't the only one who didn't know they were screening a film of the play. After that, we head back to the hotel and pass out for the night.
